In 2021, I finally invested in a fancy full frame camera body and wide angle 14mm lens but this proves having expensive gear isn’t necessary to take great photos.
When Rosie and I drove out Death Valley National Park for the annual Dark Sky Festival we did not expect to capture a comet! We knew Comet C/2022 E3 was still somewhat visible but the best nights for viewing passed weeks before our trip. For some reason, we still wanted to try and I'm so glad we did!
It was on our way out of the park on the second night that we finally got our close up. We got a few images from Badwater Basin with our wide-angled cameras but wanted to see if we could get a tighter shot.
I was shooting with a Canon 6d MII and a Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 lens.
I probably could have done a better job using my remote but I was freezing on the side of the road. I almost sat in the car and passed up on the opportunity in order to stay warm but Rosie got out... so I had to get out too. I set up my tripod and the old Canon Rebel t6 I bought in 2016 at Costco for maybe... $500?
I wanted to see if I could capture the comet with the 300mm lens that came with the kit.
To my surprise I caught it on the first try!
This was pretty special because it was our second comet chasing adventure together!! First C/2020 (NEOWISE) and now C/2022.
